What this site is
is a gear review site for people who camp, hike and travel by vehicle. We write buying guides and single product reviews for tents, sleep systems, camp kitchens, off grid power, hiking kit and overlanding gear.
The aim is narrow and practical. When you are deciding between three tents at midnight with a card in your hand, we want to be the page that settles it.
Who writes it
Everything here is written by people who use the gear. Not rewritten from manufacturer copy, not spun from other review sites. When we have not used something ourselves, we say so and tell you what we based the assessment on instead.
What we do not do
We do not accept payment for a favourable review. Brands are welcome to send gear for testing, and when they do we label it, but sending us something buys a fair test and nothing more. Several pieces of gear sent to us have ended up in the section of a roundup explaining what to avoid.
We do not publish a review for every product in a category just to catch more search traffic. If a category only has three things worth buying, the guide lists three.
How the site pays for itself
Through affiliate links. If you buy something after clicking through from here, the retailer pays us a small percentage. You pay exactly the same price either way.
The obvious risk with that model is that it rewards pushing people toward expensive gear. We deal with it by naming the cheaper option whenever the cheaper option is genuinely fine, and by telling you when the honest answer is to buy nothing. The full terms are on the affiliate disclosure page.
Corrections
Specs change, products get revised, and we get things wrong. If you spot an error, tell us at hello@outdoortreklife.com and we will fix it and note the change. Every article carries the date it was last updated at the top.
